We deliver unique projects that blend performance, participatory and creative development practice, to create experiences that inspire the imagination.
Tortoise in a Nutshell was formed in Leith in late 2010 becoming a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in 2020. From inception our specialism has been Visual Theatre practice. We create live, inspiring experiences that explore multi-textural theatrical forms and methodologies. Our stories are original, bold, and inventive, utilising non-linguistic forms of language to interrogate complex societal and human questions.
A core-underpinning of our practice has been the growth and refinement of a collaborative form of making. An artist-led, self-producing organisation, we reject the notion of the ‘auteur-artist-genius’ and instead hold a passion for joint endeavour. We aim to host open and supportive creative processes, pushing ourselves to create stronger, kinder and more accessible work, as a result.
Our Vision
Our vision is that everyone, regardless of their background, means or history, should be able to participate in the cultural life of their community.
We envision a future where Visual Theatre transcends boundaries, creating live, inspirational and exceptional experiences, which champion the universal right to cultural participation, as enshrined in Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
TiaN is committed to creating immersive, original narratives that not only explore new dimensions of storytelling but also empower individuals to engage with, enjoy, and contribute to the cultural life of our communities.
Through innovation and inclusivity, we aim to be a beacon for the arts, ensuring that the enriching experience of Visual Theatre is accessible to all, reflecting a world where cultural rights and creative expression are valued and celebrated universally.
Our Mission
Our mission is to improve participation in cultural life through the creation and sharing of exceptional Visual Theatre practice, both here in Scotland and internationally.
We commit to realising our vision through a multi-faceted approach: by creating groundbreaking Visual Theatre that bridges cultural divides and fosters a sense of global community.
We offer accessible performances, participatory practice and professional development opportunities, leveraging digital platforms to reach underserved audiences, with in-person activity.
Collaborations with international artists will bring diverse narratives to the forefront, celebrating cultural heritage and promoting mutual understanding by working across national borders.
